Is a town of vacation condos, almost 10 sq miles of condos.  It’s packed full of locals who enjoy the dry warm days and the almost six miles of sandy beaches.   There is plenty of things to do in Kihei day or night as there are plenty of local bars, restaurants, fitness clubs, water sport rentals, cafes and cinemas.

It’s a great place to bike as it’s almost entirely flat.  The park in the center of town features beach volleyball, a skating rink, kids park, tennis courts and a skate park.

Affordable Accommodations

Kihei is not a full on tourist town so the prices for accommodation and food are a bit less here.  Kahului and Kihei are where most of the island’s permanent population live and work are located.  It’s home to several research facilities, a tech park and many small businesses that serve the local industry.

Surf Schools

During the morning there are plenty of teachers out on the beaches of Kihei instructing people how to surf.  The mornings, when the wind is calm and the surf is easy to ride, makes for a great time to learn how to surf.  The best spot happens to be in the center of town at Cove Park where the sandy bottom and long rides makes for a great spot to catch your first waves.

Luaus

There are plenty of Luaus in Kihei although most head to the Lahaina area as the bigger and more upscale ones are located there.

Everything is situated along North or South Kihei road, one block in from the beach. Everything is easy to find and depending on where you are staying you can either take the bus, drive, walk or my favorite, ride the bike. There are lots of swimming spots and water activities going on right off shore. The best spot to learn to surf is the Cove Beach Park where the waves are smaller and the water is shallow.

To the north of the Cove is a large park with skateboarding, rollerskating rink, beach volley ball and tennis courts. There is also a bike path.

Across the street are numerous shops, cafes and a large grocery store. Further north up the main drag is another shopping mall and the movie theaters.

Kihei is very much like a suburban beach town on the edge of a larger city, except in this case there is no larger city close by. Kahului is 8 miles away and only slightly bigger.

At night there are many clubs and bars to check out. Some are more touristy and other’s more seedy. There are options for everyone.
